| Noise Reduction
Single coils, especially
high output ones, are prone to noise problems. Picking up interference from
external electrical systems, a big source of noise is the hum from a mains
electrical circuit. It's a problem you will very rarely encounter with
humbuckers but with single coils it can drive you nuts! A Friend of mine had
been playing humbuckers for years then bought himself a Fender Strat, single
coils, welcome to the world of noise!
There are several steps that can be taken to reduce a noise problem:
| |
| Within the guitar itself
Internal shielding within the pickup/control cavity and on the back of the
pickguard. Shielding, as the name suggests, creates a "shield" that
blocks the outside electrical interference.
Audio transformer
fitted in the guitar as used in the Gibson Les Paul Studio. This filters the noise out before the signal departs the guitar.
External systems
In some cases the noise is not being produced in the guitar, rather it is being
picked up by either effects boxes or the cables themselves. In these
circumstances an external noise filter is required. Another enthusiast and
myself designed the noise reduction system I manufacture after I encountered
considerable noise problems with my Sunburst. Strangely the original Sunburst
Blackmore played was the same, I copied it so closely that I copied the noise
problems it had as well!
The noise filter is a shielded box containing an audio transformer with a ground lift switch, fixed resistance or potentiometer and capacitor, the potentiometer
adjusts the filter level. It is supplied with balanced cables, one for between
the box and the amp and the other for between the guitar or last effects unit
and the box. I can supply cables to any length you require (within reason!) but
I will not supply the box to amplifier cable at less than 50 cm as having the
box too close to the amplifier severely reduces its effectiveness.
The Noise reduction system with cables (any length within reason!) is £40.00
including P&P within the UK. If you want a noise reduction system drop me
an email and we can discuss any special requirements, custom label, as well as
the cable lengths, fixed or variable resistance and the positioning of the
ground lift switch or the potentiometer.
As you can see from the bottom right picture if you want a custom built filter
just let me know. I can build the filter pretty much as you want it. This one has the ground lift switch on the side and the potentiometer is internal.
Please note: I do not hold stocks of the noise reduction system and cables;
they will be made to order to your specifications.
